Months ago, I had this idea that every night I would share a Bible verse on Twitter and Facebook and call it #mamasnightlight. I was good at posting for awhile, but then we moved. And in the emotional fatigue of change and loss and reunions I just couldn’t get my act together.

But I need it.

I need the truth of Scripture, the words of God in my life.

When I think of why I follow Jesus, I think of Peter’s words to Jesus. Jesus had just told the crowds of people that those who follow him must eat his flesh and drink his blood. (See John 6:25-69) Most everyone, horrified and confused by this teaching, turned and left. When the disciples didn’t leave, Jesus asked, “Why not?”

Peter could not contain himself,

Where else can we go? You alone have the words of life!John 6:68

My soul stirs within me, Yes.

God’s word has brought life to my darkest places. The reassurance that even in the darkest times that I am not alone. The promise of joy. The freedom from shame, guilt, fear. The hope of abundant life beyond my comprehension – but one that I feel should be reality even now. These are the words I find in Scripture.

Words that speak life.

I suppose it’s this life that drove me to seminary to learn how to study it and to milk every ounce out of it. It’s the weight – the glory of God’s word that bursts forth from me when I have the opportunity to preach. It is the goodness, the holiness, the glory which goes beyond my understanding and brings me to my knees in gratitude.

I just want more.

Maybe you can relate. Maybe you feel a thirst in your soul that nothing will fulfill.

Or maybe you have no need for the Bible. Maybe it’s far too different from the world we live in. Or maybe God (especially the Old Testament God) seems unjust, conniving, horrible.

Would you read with me? Would you consider why God created the Law and sacrificial system? Would you walk with me and the exiles into Babylon and consider what God’s people did that was so heinous? Would you cry out to God with David, Jeremiah, and Naomi?
