In order to give myself some time to mull through the next post on the Old Testament (coming tomorrow), I decided to take a step back and participate in this week’s Five Minute Friday. I’ve missed it this month and since I think community with other writers is so important I’m going to join in… on Wednesday.
To stay with my Write 31 Days theme, I’m going to dwell on the Old Testament.
For those of you who don’t know, at Five Minute Friday we write together for five minutes. No major edits. No second guesses, just writing to connect, to grow, to be. We would love to see you there.
This week’s writing prompt: Trust
We started Discovering God in the Old Testament dwelling on God’s promises to Abraham. He promised an old man a child. A child who would have another child, followed by another and another until there were generations of children. More than the stars in the sky.
God promised Abraham and his descendants land. He promised blessing. We are at a point in the story where it all seems to be coming true.
David is on the throne in Jerusalem and he is a good king. In fact, God has made another promise that He would always keep a king in the line of David on the throne (see 2 Samuel 7:11-16).
It’s easy to believe the promises of God when all is going well.
But what about when things are hard? It’s not long before David’s children, the line of heirs to his throne, begin to fight among themselves. One rapes his daughter. Another avenges her. And still another tries to kill David.
What then?
While David is running from his son Absolom and people are mocking him on all sides, David cries out to God:
But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.
I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
I will not fear though tens of thousands
assail me on every side.–Psalm 3:3-6
David trusts that no matter what others say, do, or think, God will be faithful. He lives a life of trust and abides by the covenant between Israel and the LORD in the Torah. For this reason alone, David is the example all of the kings are paired up against in 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles.
Lord, may my life be a life of trust in You. Help me focus in on you when everything pulls me away. Amen
